Ten Myths About Acne

Here are ten myths about acne that will clear up questions may have about this skin affliction. Myth #1 Eating chocolates and greasy foods cause acne This is not true. Studies have shown that no specific food causes acne. Myth #2 Tanning clears up skin Tanning can mask acne but it does not cure it. Myth #3 The more that you wash your face, the fewer breakouts you will have. This is not true. Washing your face gently twice a day is suggested. This should be followed by a clear water gentle rinse. Myth #4 Popping pimples will make them go away faster. This is not the case. Popping pimples and zits can lead to inflation or infection of the affected area. Myth #5 Don't wear makeup if you want clear skin. As long as you use nonacnegenic or noncomedognic make up the acne should not be adversely affected. Myth #6 If you keep getting acne breakouts, it is helpful to use more medication. You should follow the application guidelines of the medication that you are using. Too much medication or too many applications can lead to over dry skin which can compound the situation Myth # 7 Acne is caused by poor hygiene. This is absolutely not the case. Acne is caused as a result of oil that secretes from the glands in your hair follicles and blocks the pore. Hygiene is not a factor as long as you wash your face gently twice a day. Myth #8 Acne is caused by diet. Extensive studies have shown that food does not cause acne. However, maintaining a balanced diet always makes sense. Myth #9 Acne is caused by stress. The stress of every day life is not a major acne causing problem. Myth #10 Acne is just a cosmetic disease. That is true, but acne can adversely affect self esteem and become emotionally traumatic.
