Eleven More Myths About Acne

By Morgan Bryan

We have published the first ten myths about acne in a separate article. You may also want to read that article.

Myth #11
You have to let acne run its course.
That is not correct. Acne can be treated. There is no reason why acne needs to be untreated when effective medication is available.

Myth #12
Acne is for teenagers. You will grow out of it.
Teenagers do get acne more frequently than adults, but acne also occurs with adults. Adult acne often receives adverse comments from friends and fellow workers. Such remarks can cause loss of self esteem.

Myth #13
Spot treatment of acne works.
This is unfortunately not the case. The best way to treat acne is to stop the blemishes from developing in the first place. This means treating the face or other affected area on a daily basis.

Myth #14
Acne is caused by too much sex.
Your sexual habits have no affect on acne.

Myth # 15
Antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
For many years, doctors believed that combining oral contraceptives with certain antibiotics reduced the effectiveness of birth controls, increasing the risk of pregnancy. A review of a large number of dermatology patients failed to find an increased rate of pregnancy in women who were being treated with a combination of oral contraceptives and oral antibiotics. So while you should always consult with your doctor(s) before combining drugs, don't let this anecdotal information prevent you from finding the right balance of medications. For more detailed information on oral contraceptives, see "A Clinical Guide for Contraception"; Third Edition, Leon Speroff, MD, and Philip Damey, MD. Published by Lippencott Williams & Wilkins.

Myth # 16
Sweating Cleans out your pores.
This is not the case. While working out is an important part of a well controlled lifestyle, it can cause acne flare ups in certain people. Vigorous exercise can stimulate oil production in your skin. This when combined with heat, perspiration and friction can aggravate acne. Showering promptly and changing into soft and loosely fitting clothing can be a wise precaution.

Myth #17
Acne is curable.
This not yet the case, but it is very treatable. And proper treatment is recommended because of the positive affect that has on yourself esteem. See the section on acne and self esteem.

Myth #18
You should not shave if you have acne.
This is not correct. You can shave with acne. Be sure to use either a safety razor or an electric razor, and be careful of your skin. Shave lightly around blemishes to avoid nicking the skin and inviting irritation or infection. Remember to replace the blade of your safety razor in a regular basis.

Myth #19
Acne medication should only be put right on top of the blemish.
Spot treatment may work on reducing an existing blemish, but won't treat new breakouts. Apply a thin layer of your topical medication over all the areas where there are breakouts to treat and eliminate both visible and invisible lesions.

Myth #20
Acne is contagious.
Acne is a result of hormonal influences and is not contagious.

Myth #21
Acne can't be controlled.
Acne can definitely be controlled. With a little patience and attention, you can enjoy cleat and healthy skin.
